Shihan Kendall Buhl became a member of the Tokyo Joe’s family in 2001, not long after moving with his family to Ipswich, Mass.  Prior to that, Shihan spent several years in the Far East.  His time living in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taipei exposed him to several different martial arts styles.  In the Shaolin Kempo taught at Tokyo Joe’s, he found a style that brought together the best of these disciplines.

As Shihan Kendall began teaching, his devotion grew.  “I love the transformative power of the martial arts—the way it makes people grow in ways they might not have thought possible,” he says.  “I had always loved watching people get excited about the martial arts, and the progress that they made,” he says. “And then, the first time I watched a student I had introduced to the Tokyo Joe’s System achieve Black Belt, I knew this was what I wanted to do with my life.”     Salisbury Tokyo Joe’s was in the works.   Shihan Kendall was awarded the rank of Fifth Degree Black Belt, and the title “Shihan” (Master Instructor) in May of 2016.

In addition, Shihan Kendall is an Ipswich firefighter and a part-time news anchor and reporter on WBZ NewsRadio.  His greatest joy is spending time with his wife Caroline and their two children, Autumn and Gareth.
